ABC News Correspondent Miguel Marquez Beaten In Bahrain

ABC News Correspondent Miguel Marquez Beaten In Bahrain

Television, newspapers and the web have all been abuzz with news of violence against journalists covering the recent uprising and revolution in Egypt – the most recent attack to garner attention being that on CBS’ Lara Logan, who is currently recuperating from her harrowing ordeal – but, of course, violence against journalists and foreigners isn’t specific to any given country. It would now appear that ABC correspondent Miguel Marquez has also suffered a violent attack, this time while covering the unrest gripping Bahrain, particularly tensions between protesters and the military.

Marquez emerged mostly uninjured, but reports being hit with billy clubs as crowds grabbed his camera away:
“Hey! I’m a journalist here!” he yelled. ” I’m going! I’m going! I’m going! I’m going! … I’m hit,” he said. “I just got beat rather badly by a gang of thugs. I’m now in a marketplace near our hotel where people are cowering in buildings.” He paused. “I mean, these people are not screwing around. They’re going to clear that square, tonight, ahead of any protest, on Friday. The government clearly does not want this to get any bigger.”
Audio recovered from Marquez’s attack records his cries of “Journalist, journalist!” as he attempts to defend himself. Listen for yourself, courtesy of ABC:
